Malang, historically known as Tumapel, is a landlocked city in East Java, Indonesia. It has a history dating back to the age of the Singhasari Kingdom. It is the second most populous city in the province, with a population of 820,043 at the 2010 Census and 843,810 at the 2020 Census; the official estimate as of mid 2025 was 891,859. The Malang Metropolitan area was home to 3,096,425 inhabitants in 2025, spread across two cities and 22 other districts.
